The 2010 Federal Census is about to commence so it is time to start putting out the scam alerts.
The US Code, Title 13, Section 221 states that everyone is required to answer the census questions truthfully.
However there are scammers out there who try to exploit this. Here are a few things to be aware of:
1. The Census Bureau does NOT conduct the census over the internet.
2. The Census Bureau does NOT send emails concerning the census.
3. The Census Bureau NEVER asks for your social security number, ask for money, represent a political organization or ask for PINS, account numbers, etcetera.
If a person purports to be from the Census Bureau you can request to see their ID and they must show it to you. They will have a Census Badge and you can ask for a second ID.
The following link is to a Census Bureau web page explaining who to contact if you think you are being scammed. Census Bureau Scam page.
